A few months ago, I looked in the mirror at my hair and saw breakage. I noticed split ends causing untamable frizz. And for the life of me, I couldn't understand why.

For context, I have long, fine hair (albeit a lot of it) and sometimes use heat styling (with a protectant, duh). I haven’t dyed my hair in over five years, and I've never bleached it. So what gives?

I took myself to the hair salon to find out.

As soon as my new stylist ran his hands through my strands, he said, “You have dry hair.” Ding, ding, ding! It all started clicking for me.

Creating volume had always been my primary goal, but it seems I may have been focusing on the wrong thing altogether.

The reason I was noticing damage was actually because my brittle hair was seriously lacking hydration.

Since, then I've been on a mission to tame frizz and prevent breakage by crafting an ultra-moisturizing hair care routine – and I'm sharing everything I used with you.

What causes dry, brittle hair?

There’s no shortage of reasons as to why you might be experiencing dry hair, regardless of your hair type.

From overusing heat styling tools to monthly hair dye sessions and going to bed with wet hair, dryness occurs when the hair cuticle is damaged for any of the aforementioned reasons.

The drier your hair, the more brittle and prone to damage it will be, which is exactly where I was when I first started this hair journey.

How to fix dry hair

I have two words for you: maximum hydration.

The key is not only to restore moisture, but to prevent future dryness. Ultimately, the goal of this routine is to restore your strands' natural oils. I’m doing this by shaking up my hair care routine.

For starters, I've swapped my volumizing shampoo and conditioner for more hydrating options, like the hyaluronic acid-infused duo we found from Nécessaire that's ideal for a dry scalp.

And if you take anything away from this, it's never overlook your scalp, since it's the root (pun intended) of healthy hair.

On wash days, I like to massage some hair growth oil onto my scalp to prevent hair loss and promote new growth.

I typically wash my hair about twice a week, so I make sure to apply a hair mask on at least one of those days. Once I'm out of the shower, I'll apply a leave-in conditioner and a hair serum to my ends to lock in moisture. You can also add some to your locks after blowing it dry to add some shine.

After a few months of consistency, I’m finally starting to see results thanks to my new and improved hair routine, and you can too!
